The more reps you do, the more you have to move your 1RM %ages down. Fours ARE good, of course, as are fives, but threes are best imo. But if you do them every heavy workout, you get stale, hence switching between three fives and five threes. As I said, just my own experience and what works for me, but you'll find many knowledgeable powerlifters swear by the numbers three and five - three to five reps with three to five sets with three to five minutes in between sets. I suppose three fives, four fours and five threes would be another cycle variation. Might try that in the new year! My basic point is that it's no good getting only one sets of threes in on your threes day, if that makes any sense!

I do it differently but i train all three lifts where Martin is a specialised bencher. I like to work up to a top set of three on deads, I will do this on bench as well but do a set of five after. E.g. warm up then 120x3, 130x3, 140x3(top set), then try to knock a five out with 130. This is all changing though as my days of unequipped benching are behind me. After using the F6, i am hooked on equipped

Old Age Presser Member 75, 8086 posts SQ 0, BP 200, DL 200400.0 kgs @ 105kgs Eq | All good experience, Silver! As for the four hours? Act like a spectator until half an hour before you lift. You just burn off nervous energy otherwise and have little left when you come to lift. Plus make allowances for the fact that your are lifting at a different time, in a different place, on a different day to what you're used to; and you lift when someone else tells you to, not when you decide you're ready; after you've travelled, weighed in, and waited, and waited. In a leotard, in front of an audience, with three referees. And people wonder why they can't replicate their best gym lifts just like that! But next time, you'll be better for the experience of today.

Silver Surfer Member 163, 321 posts SQ 0, BP 95, DL 095.0 kgs @ 80kgs UnEq | You are spot on in your comments Martin.I certainly was over cooked and flat by the time the lifting came around.I warmed up far too early and felt a bit detached from the job at hand.Another thing I have to get used to is all the activity in the warm up area which was packed.I am the kind of person who likes to get away and prepare quietly and get into the "zone".This was hard for me when I was surrounded by others who prepare with humour and casual conversation.Getting this space is easy on an athletics track. Please take note thatin no way whatsoever is this a complaint. Its about me getting used to it. New Years Resolution No 1...Get down to a Powerlifting gym at least once per week (got it sorted already) Training all the time in my garage doesnt help any of the above! No 2..Start a sensible training routine I am going to do one hard bench session Thursday before I take a break till the start of the New Year hoping to give the body something to get on with for 10/14 days
