Had a great time at Bradford and it was good to fit faces to many names. The star of the day for me was Gary Conway who was on fire with four great lifts to raise his class national record considerably.
My second star was Martin Flett who took me under his wing and helped me prepare, and found time to get across to me that my hand placement was wrong, my breathing was s**te,my lowering of the bar with arms not the back was out of order, and my warm up was too much too early! All too much for me to take in and do on the day to do him or me justice, but valuable information which starts next session.
With my new "hander offer" I was able to secure the M6 bench title with a new national record 87.5(though I have aa 90kg pending from a qualifier)Coach Flett called for 91kgs on the bar and although I achieved this last week at a BAWLA event it wasnt in the tank today.
I move up to M7 in five months and have been scouting out the opposition, and it looks like new challenges ahead,so a couple of days rest and back to training again armed with my new approach from the golden one Cool

Just an update ...Spent most of the month of October getting over my break in South Africa.
Plenty of reps twice a week ..Plus speed and core work for the upcomming athletics season.
Only did one event this season but intend to spread myself between the two sports and go for podium places in five events powerlifting/athletics. Two first places would be great
Finished the month with a 92.5 bench press which brings me up to date where I left off.
Recieved confirmation today that the 90kg lift at Sunbury will be recognised as a new British record (BDFPA) so pleased with that....My street cred with the grandchildren will go up considerably and high fives all round!
But my own children remain a tad embarrassed by my it all I think!
Stepping it up in November.

You can't beat embarrassing your own kids. It shows you're doing something right. And usually they're secretly proud...Wink

Me againEek Just to stay in touch so my journal doesnt get thrown out.Not reporting on a weekly basis as most of what I am doing at the moment is field events related and of no particular interest to most people here.
Heavy duty squats/deadlifts are out for now.I was comming along well with them but need to be more plyo for the upcomming season.
I am compromising with the bench and will still continue to compete ,but for this one season the priority is shot/discus.So bench may drop a tad.
Good news was....Went to S/W Push and Pull to qualify for BDFPA Nationals went 85 and then 90 for new M7 British record.. was thinking about what to go for on the third when the bad news arrived...... one of the officals pointed out that I was not M7 untill my birthday!..Up to then I had thought the date was on the first of the year (plonker)
Worse yet ...My birthday falls 6 DAYS AFTER the nationals.
When I F++K up again read it here you will be the first to knowCool

Ok back again for update
Retained M6 Raw Bench title at Bradford with a pissy total. The event was won with my opener of 85kgs....so elected to go for a new British record at 92.5.Even with the encouragement of MC Flett I could not raise my game.
Two attempts failed badly. My switch to field events training showed me up on the day.
Positives...not much,....believe I could have got 90kgs but no more on the day.
70 and M7 in just 4 days. The opener I won with equalled the British record for
the M7s.
I plan to compete strongly in the masters shot/discus this summer and early training throws are looking good.I will then pick up benching heavy after the British Championships in Birmingham in July.
Good to meet up with Martin,Marc,Steve,Roy,and others.

Well done Bill. I think it's fantastic to see a (nearly) 70 year old juggling powerlifting and athletics field events. Very inspirational in its own way. I'd love to introduce you to the people who tell me I'M too old and should give it all up!!

Cheers Bill. Trouble is, it's a bit late to coach on the day - although I think I was able to point David in the right direction. Just give yourself a good two month powerlifting build up to the worlds in September so you can do yourself 100% justice. 100 kilos would be nice!
