hrat said:That's not good. Can you get a video of your deads? Not s good as real time coaching, but seeing what you're doing is a great help. Plus, sucky form might only be annoying now, but when the weight gets high it'll only get worse.

Looks like you've got the right ideas though, plenty of big compound lifts. Keep at it.

thanks for looking in, i'll try to do a vid of the deads and few other things, sunday morning i felt a tiny bit better then as the day went on felt fine, so think it was just doms tbh, maybe need to keep weights low while my body gets used to training etc, done legs today and my hamstrings/groin area pulled up in pain really bad on last set, again i think it's because im not used to it, but got a feeling my legs wont be working tomoz!? the squat form felt fine though!??!? again, prob vids are best, any advice always taken on board

tonights effots...

legs, cant feel them as i write this!? and hamstring/groin area is killing me, really started to pull up on last set of squats

Back squats
53x5
53x5
53x5
53x5
53x5

*upped these to get going with a bit of hard work, not too heavy, but the low weight helped my form, also groin/hamstring sort of area muscles started getting really painful, and are now :/ but hey ho, hopefully i can at least walk tomoz, 12hrs in work

stiff leg deads
53x5
53x5
53x5
53x5
53x5

*upped the weight, again to get myself working harder, MUCH HAPPIER with these today, i conceded i can only straightnen my back so much with trying to keep legs stiff, 53k seemed no where near enough weight, seemed so easy, but will guage this by hw my back feels tomoz,

calf raises
3x12

hanging crunches
3x12
crunches killed with my squat inflicted pains whilst lifting, but completed them, update on pains/doms tomoz.....

all in all much happier, just unhappy about my groin/hamstring area playing up,

That's an absolute monster session right there. I hope you have plenty of meat and oats in the house after that one!

Here's a second call for videos. I wanna see how you're getting on as well as read about it!!
As for the "low weight". I personally think that dropping the weight to go deeper and achieve perfect form will be the best thing you could every do for squatting. It's certainly the best thing I'd ever done.
Right now I'm lifting 90% plus but that's only to learn how to do singles properly.
in like 2 or 3 weeks I'm gonna be right back down to low weights with as perfect form as I can, like in September last year. Front squats are also outstanding for developing core strength and perfect form. GET IN THEEEEERE!!

cheers Wiegie, yeah i wanna keep form good, and will stall or drop weight where needed, and i have front squats in mind as an alternative for 12 weeks if i fancy a change at all Wink

will sort out some vids soon, they'll prob be rubbish with me being filmed working out!!!, but hopefully comments can help me do things correctly!?

tonights s.hite efforts...

flat bench press
42.5k x5
42.5k x5
42.5k x5
42.5k x5
42.5k x5

*upped all 2.5k from last week, struggled to push out last 2 reps, had to work at these, more than i'd have hoped, stick to 42.5k next week

barbell shoulder press
30k x5
30k x5
30k x5
30k x5
30k x5

*this also seemed hard work, harder than last week, so maybe the benching was down to tiredness too?

close grip bench press
35k x5
35k x5
35k x5
35k x5
35k x5

*again these were pushed out, but not as much as the rest, first time i've completed 5x5 at this weight tho, so hey ho

bit sore already!, bit of a tiresome workout, on 12hr days all weekend so it dont help one bit! didnt feel great, glad i've completed the full 5x5's at the weights tho, hopefully be easier next week and feel some more weight coming!?

bit dissapointed i missed pull day this week, feel i may have missed out on progress on that day

might think about turning this routine into a day break then next session, so running it as the same split but not 3 days a week, every other day in order, i think i may get more out of it that way when missing sessions etc, have to check it wont hinder progress though through lack of rest a week etc.....????

Deads
83k x5
83k x5
83k x5
83k x5
83k x5

*up again this week on these, no particular plan to, just couldnt be assed messing about with plates so was quicker and easier to make out to 83k, was hard work, but happy with them all the same

BB rows
30k x5
35k x5
35k x5
35k x5
35k x5

*dunno what happened here, just all felt too light, kept an eye on form, last set started to feel heavy, happy with 5k uppage though

Ez-curls
28k x5
28k x5
28k x5
28k x5
28k x5

*pushed out last set, noticed difference in how hard from upping bb rows weight

push session friday, took "N.O. BLAST" 20 mins before, my arms and face were on fire, burning like hell and looked beetroot after 10 mins, gunna have to look into the intake of that s**t! but it did say 1 scoop....!?

flat bench press
40k x5
40k x5
40k x5
40k x5
40k x5

*just went with 40k after the n.o. blast messing me up for a bit, struggled last set, but felt better going into the rest of the session

barbell shoulder press
30k x5
30k x5
30k x5
30k x5
30k x5

*still just pushing these out......

close grip bench press
40k x5
40k x5
40k x5
40k x5
40k x5

*up to 40k this week! fcuk knows how/why, were hard, but great, bit pissed that my flat bench press isnt a decent amount of weight above these those

not a bad session, proper fcuked off after though, went to mow the lawn and managed to slice through my finger to the bone, tendons hanging out, few stitches and right the way in the bend under side of knuckle crease, annoying as fcuk, ffs, why me, fcuk fcuk fcuk fcuk, gunna affect, footy, work, bbing and everything for a while now, legs tomoz, so hopefully guage how to train without f**king my finger up even more........................

quick leg effort before nightshifts for 2 nights...

Back squats
53x5
53x5
53x5
63x5
63x5

*added the 10k for last 2 sets, felt ok

stiff leg deads
63x5
63x5
63x5
68x5
68x5

*upped the weight, after feeling 53k was too light last time, still felt light so added another 5k, felt ok, feel abit more coming next week too maybe!?

calf raises
3x12

crunches
3x12

*just crunches this week, couldnt do usual hanging leg raises due to hand not being able to grab pull up bar to "hang"

happy with the effort, although hamstring tweaked again, but i think it was down to positioning, as i straightened my legs inwards on the way down and felt ok????

Sucks about the finger. Do you have lifting straps or even hooks to use while it heals?

Maybe check out some benching technique vids, since your close grip bench and shoulder press seem proportionately pretty strong.

i'm looking into straps atm, but havent been worried about them with just starting out etc, i'll look into some vids, thanks for mentioning it as i would have just thought it was because i'm just a weak bencher etc, maybe i am!? i have no chest at all! need to get up my dead and squat vids to check form too.....

That vid will help your DL no end.

Good training here mate, good to see someone starting light and doing it properly. 5x5 is a good program and you should get a lot of mileage out of it providing you don't get ahead of yourself.

Oh and eat a lot!

Good call Rico; Rippetoe is a pretty safe bet for form.

You might be weak on bench (I sure am), but I reckon most guys you see in a gym are bench monkeys, and disproportionately strong. Either way, sorting out form can only help. Rippetoe's bench form is probably what you want; not an arch-tastic powerlifting style, not bodybuilding style chest exercise.
