I've been logging for a couple of years on bodybuilding.com but I think I'd feel more at home in proximity to other serious British powerlifters as opposed to a lot of mostly immature teenagers who post stupid pictures and type in a way insulting to the English language.

I've competed in a few competitions, all Scottish Powerlifting thus far; I'm competing tomorrow at the BDFPA Scottish Division unequipped. I've trained properly for about 2 years now which was preceded by a transformation from around 57KG to 74KG.

My PBs in competition are:

Squat: 170KG
Bench: 95KG
Deadlift: 192.5KG

After doing madcows 5x5 for several months I have decided to start afresh with Wendlers 5/3/1/ although it is with a heavy heart that I only squat once a week (I am used to and much in love with squatting 3 times a week)

I look forward to making my bid to break some junior records with the little genetic quality I possessCool

Thanks guysCool I live in Glasgow, attend Glasgow University and have opened a Weightlifting/Powerlifting club for the uni recently. My vice-president (known as Rico on this forum) and I have huge plans for it as far as promoting and advancing powerlifting in a desert environment where the guys (mostly guys - we have quite a few keen ladies) who could benefit from it and are actually strong are not interested.

I had my first BDFPA comp today. It was sort of a last minute.com and I was lucky to get the day of work in such short notice.

My lifts at 78.4KG were:

Squat: 160KG, 170KG, 180KG - grinded last rep out

Bench: 97.5KG, 100KG, 105KG (Fail) - bombed on last rep. Wanted to get 110KG but just wasn't happening today. The bench and bar felt really unfamiliar and heavy and it affected my confidence which was already low as my bench technique is pretty pathetic to begin with.

Deadlift: 190KG, 200KG, 210KG

490KG total - annoying because had I got that 110KG bench I'd have broken 500KG

Wendler's starts on Monday...stay tuned

Well done mate, always good to break your competition cherry Happy

Don't worry about the missed bench, going 8/9 at your first meet is very impressive!

Today I start Wendler's 5/3/1 and I am still debating whether or not to do the 4th week deload. But I used a spreadsheet given to me by my training partner and used it to estimate numbers for workout. I am using a hybrid of the BBB and triumvirate as shown below:

Strict Press

37.5KG x5
40.0KG x5
42.5KG x8 PR

Put belt on for last set - may as well start getting used to it now. Squeezed out last rep and left it at that as I don't want to go to failure which I am sure is the premise of this program

Seated Press

The way I do this is do 2 sets with the angle at number 8 (near vertical), 2 sets at 7 and 2 sets at 6, increasing weight marginally with respect to incline degree. Total 6 sets and should hit all pressing muscles nicely

40.0KG x10 (8)
40.0KG x10 [7) I'll bring fractional plates next time
42.5KG x10 (6)

Felt great burn in shoulders and chest

Lat Pulldown

54.0KG x10x3 (Wide-grip)
54.0KG x10x3 (Close-grip)

Nice short workout. Stay tuned for deadlift day tomorrow. Really hope my back isn't too sore by then!

How did you find the BDFPA comp compared with your previous scottish powerlifting comps?

Decent numbers on sat, solid lifting all round! As you've found out nothing goes to plan on the day. Was a last minute thing for me too as only found out about it and entered about 2weeks ago so never got to train up for it. When's your next comp? You got any plans of lifting equipped in the future?

First of all: how do I multiquote? x

Well I found the BDFPA competition pretty similar to SPF comps only the wait time between bench and deadlifts is much shorter in the former. Also a lot more newcomers were at this comp.

Stephen Mullen yes? Your lifts were pretty dam impressive and inspirational. A lot of guys I have seen like Tom Martin lifting 350KG at my weight class really drive me to lift more each time. I do plan to go geared (same thing as equipped?) once I've hit my goals for this year RAW. I'd really like to break some Junior records and I only have this year to reach them as I turn 23 September. I want to squat 190KG, bench 135KG and deadlift 235KG. It will be hard but I'm seriously committed to it.

I'm thinking about the Scottish powerlifting comp on March 19th - but now that I look at it I won't have improved much between now and then so maybe I should bide my time until July.

Did some conditioning tonight - 7 sprints up a steep hill in Kelvingrove park. Very intense and blasted the hams/glutes nicely

Aye it's Stephen Mullin, not sure my lifts are as you descibe but thanks. Geared/equipped = same thing. That's some good targets to go for before starting equipped lifting and if I were you I'd compete as much as you can to gain experience and also it's the best way to improve as you can't slack off training if you've got a comp coming up and goals to achieve. I haven't competed much in the last year or so due to injuries but in past years were I competed in 5/6 powerlifting comps and 2/3 strongman comps I made tons of progress and had a great time too.

Great stuff Stephen, all you big guys inspire me a lot!

Deadlifts today and I have gotten out of the habit of working out first thing in the morning (7am). Things are very quiet then but I don't trust the pressure on my spine when it is still asleep and my energy levels are obviously much lower.

Deadlift

142.5KGx5
152.5KGx5
162.5KGx10 PR Belted

Probably could have done a few more but don't want to burn out that quickly

Deficit Deadlift

Done on one of those 3inch boards used for all sorts of wacky applications in the gym

110.0KGx10x5

Did some grip work but stopped due to time constraints and because of the accumulation of callouses.

Tried doing shrugs (not done these in ages) but kept hitting my package. Will need to find away around this...

Nice mate. Could try DB shrugs/farmers walks or plate pinch shrugs?

Training tomorrow?
